How to Solve Any Problem: A Step-by-Step Approach

We all face problems in our lives from time to time. Some problems are quite manageable, and some are so huge that make us stressed and confused. But is there a way to solve any problem no matter how big or small it is? In this post we are going to explore just that. We will try to find some ways in which we can solve any problem in a step-by-step approach to find clarity and calmness in the times of misery.

What are emotions?

There are broadly two types of emotions that we feel. First one is the good emotions. These are the emotions that makes us feel good, happy, comforted, motivated, loved, and excited etc.

The other one type of emotions are bad emotions. These makes us feel bad, scared, anxious, small, demotivated, and stuck etc.

We can use these definitions to define what a problem is, which is in the next section.

What is a problem?

A problem is any situation in our life where we feel bad emotions.

Being in a problem is not the same as being in a difficult situation. There are many situations in our life that may be difficult, but we don’t necessarily think of them as problems. For example, while playing your favourite sport you might find yourself in some difficult situations sometimes. But that does not count as a problem because the emotions that you feeling are excitement and joy; not fear or anxiety.

Similarly, being around a friend or coworker who has a habit of asking for favours might not seem that difficult at first but becomes a problem eventually.

Thus, a problem is a situation where you are feeling stuck, fearful, anxious, confused, and on your toes all the time.

In the following sections I have tried to list a few steps which you can take to find solutions and come out of this state.

Step 1: Identification:

It is often observed that people who are feeling bad emotions do not even know why they are feeling that way. They cannot pinpoint what might be causing this. They carry on in their lives without realising that it is not healthy or normal to feel this way all the time. There must be something else causing it. Observing yourself and your situations in life might help you identify the underlying problem.

That is why the first step of solving any problem is identifying that you are facing a literal problem, and it is not all in your head.

Step 2: Naming your problem:

After the identification, the next step is nomenclature. Naming the issue will help you gain immense clarity and guide you towards the next step towards finding the solution to that problem.

Is it something like excessive workload, lack of hobbies or being in a company of people who gossip all the time? There can be many issues that you might need to resolve.

If you cannot find it yourself, try to research about why you might be feeling this way and maybe you will learn some new concepts that may help you understand yourself and your situation better.

Step 3: Action:

Now that you know about the problem you are facing, it is time to take action to solve it. Each type of problem will have some specific solution to it. For that, first specifying your problem is beneficial.

Identifying and naming the problem will help you specify your problem. Now you can implement the specific solution of that problem.

For example: you might be feeling uncertain and anxious because of unemployment. You may be unemployed due to lack of awareness about how to catch the opportunities, or you might be not skilled enough. Things like that can be solved by you developing your skillsets, doing projects, actively applying on job portals or reading books and attending seminars or lectures about how to get a job.

These were some very basic examples, but you may apply similar approach to find solutions to your problem and take an action.

Step 4: Talking with Experts and people who have been through it:

If you are not able to find a solution by yourself, you can talk with an expert who can help you in finding a good solution out of that problem. Also, you may talk with other people who have been through similar situations and gain valuable insights from their experiences. This way you can find a unique solution to your problem as well.

Step 5: Mindset:

I am sure that after identifying and naming the problem you instantly felt a lot better. In a similar way, it is important to be open to the new possibilities and solutions to all your problems.

Some problems like dealing with a toxic person or not being able to say no, may not have any tangible solutions. In such cases working on your mindset becomes essential. In some cases, you can leave the toxic workplace or a community but there is no guarantee you won’t find such people and situations again.

Thus, having the right mindset and knowing when to leave is a very important factor while searching for solutions.
