Not just the toddlers of America but young babies and toddlers from all around the world seem to be interested in these happy little videos.
But what makes it so fun for kids? How has a YouTube channel become so popular and gained such a mass following? In this article, I would like to present some reasons and opinions about the massive success of cocomelon while also discussing its success story. So let us explore the fun and happy world of cocomelon.
A Quick Backstory of Cocomelon:
This all started when Treasure Studio Inc. was founded in 2005 by Jay Joen. A year later, on September 1, 2006, he created a YouTube channel named “checkgate”, on which he started uploading entertaining and educational videos for kids.
In 2013, the studio changed the channel name from “checkgate” to ABC Kid TV. They also introduced a new logo for the channel in the shape of a ladybug.
In 2018, Jay Joen rebranded his company and renamed it the legendary “cocomelon”. They also redesigned the logo into a ladybug shaped like a square watermelon.
After acquiring immense success and popularity, Jay Joen sold his company to the British children’s media company, Moonbug Entertainment in 2020.
What Makes Cocomelon Stick?
Now that we have some idea about the chronology of this YouTube channel, we will try to understand what were some of the reasons for the eventual success of Cocomelon.
Many parents and caregivers experience this great event when their toddler start to sing along to the video, they have been watching for some time. You wonder how fascinating it is that my baby can remember and pronounce the words of a poem. You love to witness your child learn all the words and actions happening in that video.
But why is it that children can remember only some specific types of songs and videos?
I was wondering about the same when I saw my 2-year-old niece cutely reciting the lyrics while watching a cocomelon video.
Repetition:
One of the most important reasons behind the success of Cocomelon is the repetitive lyrics of their videos and songs. Most of their rhymes have lyrics that repeat in an orderly way with a change of one or two words.
For example, the video named “Yes Yes Vegetables Song” has about 3.2 billion views on Cocomelon YouTube channel.
The lyrics of this rhyme are as follows:
“Peas, peas, it’s time to eat your peas
Yes yes yes I want to eat my peas
Good, good! The peas are good for you
Yay, yay, yay, I love them, oooh
See, see, Teddy likes them too
One, two, three! He ate them up, you see
Ha! Ha! Ha! The peas are all gone now
Yum, yum, yum, we like them, wow!”
And the lyrics continue similarly with different vegetables. The words in these lyrics repeat in an orderly way making a hook in the child’s brain.
As the children listen to words repeated in the songs, they start to recognize and remember these words more. This helps in improving the memory and learning capacity of the child and in turn, helps in brain development.
Meme Culture:
Another reason for the popularity of the Cocomelon YouTube channel worldwide is “meme culture”. You must have seen some kind of meme videos on platforms like YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels about children being immersed in cocomelon videos or content about how children run at the speed of lightning when they listen to the opening sound of cocomelon.
These types of videos help in the marketing and promotion of the channel. This also helps in extending the word to people who might not have heard about this channel before.
Nice Visuals:
It is no doubt that the reason why Cocomelon videos are so popular is because of their 3D visuals. The 3D animated videos with bright colours are easy on the eyes and such great visuals make one click on these videos more in comparison to others.
Easy and Beginner-Friendly Words:
Most songs in Cocomelon videos incorporate lyrics with simple words. Children can learn and remember these words easily. Also, these rhymes have short length sentences making them easier for children to comprehend and remember.
Relatable Storyline:
Videos on Cocomelon usually have relatable storylines like the journey of people on a bus and a mom telling her kids to eat vegetables, etc. Many videos are also made with classic and already popular poems such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Johny Johny Yes Papa! This helps in making these videos easily relatable and popular.
Consistent Uploads:
What helped Cocomelon achieve great success was frequent and consistent uploads on their channel. Since starting their channel in 2006 they have been uploading videos, but they saw a massive boom only when they started to upload consistently and frequently.
Hectic Lifestyle of Parents:
Most parents have hectic lifestyles these days, using computers and digital screens to engage their kids for some time is becoming a norm. This change in lifestyle is causing more and more people to turn to the Internet to entertain their kids.
Accessibility of the Internet in Remote Areas:
As the internet is becoming more and more accessible in remote parts of the world, the popularity of many YouTube channels is also rising. One of which is cocomelon. Many new mothers and fathers incorporate the use of technology in their parenting. Playing educational and entertaining rhymes and poems for kids is becoming much more popular.
Conclusion:
So, this was an article about the story of a dad (Jay Joen) whose consistent and valuable efforts led to the making of a legendary nursery rhyme YouTube channel whose videos are watched all around the world.
